Instagram direct messages are a useful way to have a quick conversation on social media. Today, however, they have fundamentally changed. Facebook Messenger takes control of Instagram direct messages.
In a post published today, Instagram explains the change. With Facebook Messenger supporting the Instagram messaging experience, your message threads and calls can be accessed from both apps. This update also means that Instagram is adding many important Facebook Messenger features, including reactions, chat colors, and even watching videos synced with someone else.
Facebook also brings new features with this update. You can use Selfie stickers as reactions in Messenger and act as the Boomerang feature of Instagram. The “Watch Together” feature now also works with IGTV. There is also a new “Disappear Mode” that removes messages as soon as the person reads them.
In particular, this change does not require the installation of Facebook Messenger on your device. You can use Instagram to access Messenger and its features. There is no need to upgrade to the new experience right away. You can simply click “Not now” when the update request arrives if you want to stick with traditional direct messages for longer.
This change will be implemented in “certain countries” starting today and will soon go global.
